Musician Rosalía brings the straitjacket back into view
  + stars: | 2024-05-03 | by ( Leah Dolan | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
CNN —On Tuesday, 12-time Latin Grammy winner Rosalía stepped out in New York wearing an outfit that demanded a double-take. (Since the release of her third album, “Motomami,” Rosalía has been spotted in everything from biker-style shield sunglasses to Harley Davidson helmets). In 1994, the New York State’s Office of Mental Health proposed that straitjackets be discontinued after 18 patients died while restrained or in “unsupervised seclusion” between 1988 and 1992. But Rosalía isn’t the first to attempt to recontextualize the garment in the name of fashion. At the Gucci show in 2019, Ayesha Tan-Jones protested the label's straitjacket-inspired clothes by writing "Mental health is not fashion" on their hands.

For decades, Pakistan’s military has been the country’s most vital institution. Although it frequently intervened to oust elected governments, many Pakistanis saw this as salvation from the country’s blundering politicians. The army, it was thought, was the only force capable of holding the country together. The military has suffered a catastrophic loss of prestige after the populist former prime minister Imran Khan directly challenged its influence. This month, Pakistani military posts were hit by separate militant attacks in the country’s south and along the border with Afghanistan.

Goldman Sachs announced its 2023 class of managing directors Thursday afternoon, giving 608 employees the coveted title. It's a smaller cohort than the bank's 2021 MD class, down 5% amid a dealmaking slowdown. Still, Goldman appears to have taken pains to promote employees in revenue-generating divisions like investment banking and trading. Goldman says the percentage of women it promoted as part of the 2023 MD class sets a record, up 1% from 2021. Two years ago, Goldman promoted the largest managing director class in its history, naming 643 employees to the designation in 2021.

Mr. Ziadna, 26, was slain inside his tent, and four members of his Bedouin family vanished. At least 17 people killed in the Hamas attacks were Bedouins in and around Rahat, the biggest city in an impoverished, predominantly Bedouin area of southern Israel. Hamas did not directly target Bedouins, but “rockets and bullets don’t discriminate,” Dr. Fraiha said. People are scared.”Even before the recent attacks, Bedouins had long suffered at the hands of Hamas. The largely aluminum roofs of the Bedouin homes turn into deadly shrapnel, which she called “knives.” Hamas rockets killed several members of one Bedouin community.

After a long period of scepticism towards European equities, some investors and analysts are finding cause for optimism. European companies are expected to enter their first earnings recession - two consecutive quarters of falling earnings - since 2020. But European stocks are better priced for a recession than their U.S. counterparts, said Matthew McLennan, co-head of First Eagle’s Global Value team. First Eagle's McLennan said the weaker euro in part supported the outlook for European equities. "There's some possibility that European equities, by both their valuation and their currency valuation, could do better than U.S. equities over a period of time".

ON A LATE summer day at Noble Rot, a restaurant and wine bar on Central London’s Lamb’s Conduit Street, I met one of England’s most distinguished legal professionals for lunch. Helena Kennedy, KC (indicating King’s Counsel, the most senior ranking of barristers, or trial attorneys) sipped Champagne and glanced at the next table where another barrister had draped his black gown over a spare chair. He had just started on a second bottle of Bordeaux.

New Zealand scraps last of its Covid restrictions

“While our case numbers will continue to fluctuate, we have not seen the dramatic peaks that characterized COVID-19 rates last year,” the health minister added. Covid has put considerably less pressure on the health care system this winter, New Zealand’s current season, with cases accounting for just 2.2% of recent hospital admissions, according to the government. “If New Zealand had had a similar rate of Covid-19 mortality as the United States, we would be reporting around 15,000 deaths from Covid,” he argued. As health minister during much of the pandemic Hipkins was closely associated with the zero-Covid controls. New Zealand goes to the polls in October, and Labour are facing a stiff challenge from the center-right opposition National Party.

REUTERS/Lucy Craymer/File PhotoWELLINGTON, Aug 14 (Reuters) - New Zealand's government will lift all remaining COVID-19 requirements from midnight Tuesday, bringing an end to some of the toughest COVID-19 pandemic rules in the world more than three years after they were put in place. “While our case numbers will continue to fluctuate, we have not seen the dramatic peaks that characterised COVID-19 rates last year. This, paired with the population’s immunity levels, means Cabinet and I am advised we’re positioned to safely remove the remaining COVID-19 requirements,” Verrall said. Most of the restrictions were removed last year as vaccination rates reached high levels and the country’s hospitals successfully navigated a winter without being overwhelmed.

An image comparing old and new photos of armed women sitting in a jeep has been falsely claimed to show Bangladeshi “freedom fighters” from the country’s 1971 Liberation Movement. Reuters traced the image back to a July 2013 Facebook post crediting Renan Ahmed (here). He said the original black-and-white photo of the women was captured in 1961 – a decade before the civil war. Renan said in Facebook replies that the later image, which is a recreation with the same women, was captured in 2017 (here). The photo was taken a decade before the 1971 civil war in Bangladesh and was captured for fun after a hunting trip.
Steph and Ayesha Curry penned a letter opposing a townhouse development near their home in Atherton, California. "This is a tough thing for a community like Atherton to change," Atherton City Manager George Rodericks told NBC. Since 1969, California law has required cities to update their housing and land use needs, known as "Housing Elements," every eight years to ensure enough affordable housing is available to residents. Cities who fail to comply with the deadline could lose grant funding and face lawsuits from the state Attorney General. Cities spanning from San Francisco to Los Angeles have had their plans approved by state regulators, with many plans including efforts to increase density on developable land.
WELLINGTON, Jan 4 (Reuters) - The New Zealand government said on Wednesday it would not require travellers from China to produce a negative COVID-19 test, bucking a trend that has seen a number of nations implement such measures as cases surge in China. New Zealand's COVID-19 minister, Ayesha Verrall, said in a statement that a public health risk assessment had concluded visitors from China would not contribute significantly to the number of cases in the country. "There is minimal public health risk to New Zealand," she said. All international arrivals in New Zealand are asked to test if they become symptomatic and the country provides free tests at the airport. New Zealand is also planning to trial testing waste water on international flights to see if this can replace targetted and voluntary testing of individuals.
A UK judge ordered Sheikh Mohammed of Dubai to pay a $679 million divorce settlement to his ex-wife. Princess Haya had filed for divorce in London, known as "the divorce capital of the world." It also reaffirmed London's status as the de facto "divorce capital of the world," at least for the rich and famous. The often-cited case — "White v White" — concerns Martin White and Pamela White, farmers from Somerset who filed for divorce in 1994. Lawyers for Khoo told the court that his case had enhanced "the ill-gotten reputation of this country for being the divorce capital of the world."
Since buying Twitter, Elon Musk has conducted mass layoffs and reportedly ordered 84-hour workweeks. Musk's reign at Twitter, which began when he took ownership of the platform in late October, has been chaotic. Most Twitter employees would be able to get another job relatively easily. "If you're technical talent, you're still going to be in demand if you're good," said Steve Cadigan, who runs Cadigan Talent Ventures and previously worked on mergers and acquisitions at Cisco. Even though the self-dubbed chief twit's path isn't clear to observers, Cadigan said Musk typically knows what he's doing.
CNN —New Zealand passed a historic anti-smoking bill in Parliament on Tuesday, banning the sale of tobacco to anyone born on or after January 1, 2009. The new law will also slash the number of retailers licensed to sell tobacco, from 6,000 to 600 by the end of 2023. Smoking rates in New Zealand – already among the world’s lowest – are falling, having decreased from 9.4% to 8% in the past 12 months, according to Verrall. The legislation – the Smokefree Environments and Regulated Products (Smoked Tobacco) Amendment Bill – will also reduce the amount of nicotine allowed in tobacco products, aiming to make them less addictive. Official data shows 8.3% of adults are now vaping daily, up from 6.2% in the past year.
Their divergent reactions suggest that perhaps there isn't a great way to let employees know you're getting rid of them. In the memo, CEO Chris Licht called the process of conducting layoffs a "gut punch." "I think employees appreciate advance notice that layoffs are coming," said Jaime Klein, the CEO of the human-resources consultancy Inspire HR. "That's really, really important," he added, because it shows that leadership is being relatively transparent and has some empathy for employees. If you ever want to rehire some of the employees you're letting go, it helps to leave a good impression.
Workers at Google and other big tech companies in recent years have clashed and protested over politics and racial and gender equity. "We've always been proud to host external speakers at Google, as they provide great opportunities for learning and connection for our employees," Google spokesman Ryan Lamont told Reuters. Rivals such as Meta Platforms Inc (META.O) also have policies for inviting speakers. At Google, speakers have included then-U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama, celebrity chef Ayesha Curry and former basketball star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. At least one of the critics suggested inviting for balance Rajiv Malhotra, according to an internal message.

But sometimes, the occasion can elevate the final into a historic match, as was the case at the women’s rugby World Cup as New Zealand defeated England 34-31 in Auckland to become the first ever host nation to win the tournament. It had everything: countless tries, a red card, a brilliant comeback, a hat-trick, and a world-record crowd for a women’s rugby game packed into Eden Park. Five minutes later, Cokayne completed her hattrick and set up a grandstand finale with the scoreline poised at 29-31 to England. “You could not have asked for more from the girls, it’s a very special group and we can be immensely proud of what we’ve done for the women’s game. “It will hurt, we don’t want to be losing World Cup finals especially in the manner that we’ve done, but I’m so, so proud of what we’ve done.”
Since buying Twitter, Elon Musk has fired execs and reportedly asked for 84-hour workweeks.
